Roleplaying at the table
Playing the Story Together
This campaign is not a story you are inside of — it is a story we are building together.
Your character matters, your choices matter, and how you engage at the table shapes the world in lasting ways.
This guide exists to help you roleplay with confidence, support other players, and get the most out of each session.
Roleplaying with Purpose
Roleplaying isn’t about accents or monologues — it’s about intentional choices.
When making decisions, consider:
- What does my character want right now?
- What are they afraid of losing?
- What belief, habit, or flaw is guiding this action?
Clear motivation creates meaningful scenes, even when the outcome is uncertain.
Adding to the Story
You are encouraged to:
- Describe how you do things, not just what you do
- Offer emotional reactions, body language, or brief inner thoughts
- Introduce small details about your character’s past, beliefs, or values
You don’t need permission to add flavor — if it supports the scene, it belongs.
The world will respond.
When to Jump In
Jump into a scene when:
- Your character has a strong opinion or stake
- You can escalate tension or deepen emotion
- You can support another player’s moment
Short interjections, reactions, and follow-ups are often more powerful than long speeches.
When to Step Back
Step back when:
- Another player is clearly having a character moment
- Your input would derail the tone or pacing
- You’ve already spoken several times in a row
Giving space is an active contribution.
A great table breathes.
Your Character & the Party
Your character should:
- Be interested in at least one other party member
- Have a reason to stay, even when things get difficult
- Care about outcomes beyond their own success
You don’t need to trust everyone — but you should engage with them.
Preparing Before a Session
Before each session, consider one or two of these:
- What does my character hope happens today?
- Who in the party do I want to learn more about?
- Create some questions before hand that you would ask while keeping watch together.
- Find relatable character aspects to introduce topics and expand on your understanding of the other characters
- What unresolved tension or question is on my character’s mind?
- What would push my character closer to change?
You don’t need answers — just direction.
Building Relationships In-Game
Ask questions in character when it feels natural:
- “Why did you hesitate back there?”
- “You’ve done this before, haven’t you?”
- “What happens if we fail?”
Curiosity creates connection. Connection creates story.
A Collaborative World
The setting is alive, but it is not fixed.
Your actions can:
- Change how factions see you
- Alter the fate of locations
- Create opportunities, enemies, and legends
Nothing exists in isolation. What you invest in will grow.
Final Note
You don’t need to perform. You don’t need to be perfect.
Be present. Be curious. Be intentional.
We’re building something together.
